I find that using a location lends to a more relaxed atmosphere than in a studio, especially when photographing children. More of the character of the subject can show through in the photos when you haven’t got multiple studio lights directed at them.
The best time to photograph portraits in the outdoors is either first thing in the morning or in the last few hours before sunset. This avoids the harsh light around midday when the sun is at its highest.
